NeoCities allows for the creation of whatever you want, total user freedom in creating your website how you want it. It can be the subject of a book review blog like The Reading Project, it can be a display like Adelines Museum to Hatsune Miku, or even a small hypertext world like Blamesir’s monastery. As proclaimed by the NeoCities donation page NeoCities is creativity first and affords for the creation of whatever its user's heart desires. In eliminating the ease of use of a template website, or social media NeoCities affords complete freedom.
My hope for the internet is a place to foster free information and creative expression, and social media does not want that, Social media wants Content. Content is antithetical to art it is a faceless grey mush that feeds the gears of social media. Algorithmic advertisement wants to push artists to homogenize their output, and create the best Content for the algorithm and for viriality. Content cannot push the boundaries, it has to be “advertiser-friendly” and mass-market. I want an internet where people can create art whether that art is a traditional drawing, video, music, commentary, or compilation, it's all art, and the word Content reduces the creativity and artistry of online creators. I want an internet where people are free to pursue whatever fulfills them creatively and not feel the pressure of an algorithm dictating their every small move. NeoCities is a part of that resistance. Something that affords greater freedom of expression without a price tag. A big factor in the “contentification” of the internet is the centralization of online traffic. NeoCities and personal websites further rob the central websites of some of their power and afford them less control of the face of the internet. NeoCitites is small so the amount of power it can take away is small. But it is something that I can do to resist a monolithic impossibly large corporation. It affords a space for its users to live in and the smallest bit of resistance to a status quo they do not want.
